Crude oils with low sulfur may refine within the allowable fuel specifications for diesel and naphtha without the need for a desulfurization process. Fuel oil specifications determine the maximum allowable sulfur content in the crude oil to avoid the expense of desulfurization equipment.
Sweet crude - less than 0.5% sulfur
Sour crude - greater than 1.0% sulfur
Light, or low density - greater than 34 degrees API
Heavy, or high density - less than 30 degrees API
